What are the benefits of a knee replacement?

A knee replacement can give you a new lease on life.

Just Imagine…

Having less knee pain and your joint(s) moving more smoothly, enabling you to walk around more easily and get back to the things you love.

What are the benefits of a knee replacement? | The most common reason for having knee replacement surgery is to ease pain caused by osteoarthritis or arthritis. People who need knee replacement surgery usually have problems walking, climbing stairs and getting up out of chairs. If only one part of the knee is damaged, Mr Stitson will replace just that part.

Osteoarthritis or arthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the protective cartilage around your joints wears down, leading to bone-on-bone contact and eventually pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joint.

Mr David Stitson, a specialist in total joint replacement at The Nuffield Hospital, Plymouth, will recommend treatment methods such as surgery to remove the damaged parts of the knee and replace them with artificial implants designed to mimic the function of a healthy knee joint.

Some thoughts from a recent patient…

I’m 72 and in the past 9 months, I’ve had two full knee replacements, both performed by Mr. Stitson. The result has been a total transformation in my mobility.

Within 4 weeks of the second operation, I did a 4 mile hilly road walk. Two days later I did 6 miles and then since then I’ve done several more lengthy walks including along the Cornish Coast Path, something I’ve not been able to do for some 15 years.

Recovery from both operations was great. I was off the crutches after 3 weeks the first time and after 2 weeks the second time.

Let me add, that the first two weeks were painful and difficult, but the reason I am writing this is to encourage you, should you have the same operation, to have the determination to get through that initial period. The end result is well worth the effort. (See more testimonials).

5 Benefits of a Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacements are one of the most successful surgical procedures and offer several benefits for individuals experiencing severe pain and reduced mobility including:

  • Reduce or eliminate knee pain:
Chronic knee pain from arthritis can make it difficult to walk, climb stairs, get a good night’s sleep, and perform activities of daily living. One of the primary benefits of a total knee replacement is that it can significantly reduce or eliminate knee pain.

  • Joints can move more freely:
When osteoarthritis damages the cartilage in your knee joint, the surfaces become rougher, and the knee doesn’t move smoothly, causing stiffness and pain. After a total knee replacement, the joint can move more freely. This not only makes walking and stairs much easier, but many people find they can engage in activities they had not done for years due to their prior knee issues – such as hiking, cycling, and swimming.

  • Regain self-sufficiency:
Regaining mobility is a key component in restoring personal independence. Whether taking back ownership of daily tasks, moving around freely, or returning to hobbies or activities previously enjoyed, many people are able to regain a sense of self-sufficiency that had been lost due to knee issues.

  • Sets you up for success:
Chronic pain and mobility issues can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. A knee replacement followed by physical therapy will set you up for success in increasing your strength, improving stability,  maintaining a healthy weight, and eventually returning to the physical activities you love.

  • Improved your quality of life:
One of the biggest benefits of having a total knee replacement is an improved quality of life. Pain relief can lead to a better mood and outlook. At the same time, increased mobility means engaging in activities that may not have been possible before — allowing you to truly enjoy life again.
