“Based in Plymouth, Devon I am honoured to hold full practice privileges and admitting rights at Nuffield Hospital, Plymouth. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and my name appears on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council.
I trained as a doctor at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and as a student joined the Royal Air Force as a medical cadet. Having qualified in 1991, I worked in various NHS and Military Hospitals, including twelve months at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
Following this, I entered higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics working in Plymouth, Truro, Oxford and Middlesbrough. I then undertook a six-month fellowship at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in Australia to gain further experience in lower limb arthroplasty.
I was appointed Military Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant at MDHU Derriford in Plymouth in early 2003 and continued in that role until 2015. During that period I undertook numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and regular Military Outpatient Clinics at HMS Drake in Plymouth.
In addition, since 2003 I have performed dedicated monthly orthopaedic outpatient clinics at the Royal Marines Training Centre, Lympstone, providing assessment and treatment for recruits and permanent staff and giving advice to the chain of command. Having left the Royal Air Force in 2015, I continue to work as a civilian NHS consultant at Derriford Hospital.
As well as the civilian and military trauma experience, I have developed elective expertise in primary and revision arthroplasty of the hip and knee. Within this, I have a particular sub-specialist interest in hip replacement in young adults and in the use of CT-planning, and custom-made implants for hip replacement. I also provide a full range of knee replacement procedures ranging from partial knee replacement to complex revision replacement and can now also offer a similar CT-planned custom solution for total knee replacement where indicated.
